What is the Work Hours Calculator and How Does It Work?

The Work Hours Calculator finds how many hours you work in a single day based on your start time, end time, and break duration, then projects that figure out to weekly, monthly, and yearly totals based on how many days you work per week.

Calculation Formula
Daily Hours = (End Time − Start Time − Break Minutes) / 60

Daily hours are found by subtracting start time, break minutes, from end time. This daily figure is then multiplied by work days per week, by roughly 4.33 weeks for a monthly total, and by 52 weeks for a yearly total.

Where:
Start / End Time= Your workday start and end time
Break Minutes= Unpaid break time subtracted from the day
Work Days/Week= How many days per week you work (default 5)
Worked Calculation Examples
Standard 9-to-5 Workday
Input:Start 9:00 AM, End 5:00 PM, 30 min break, 5 days/week
Output:7.5 hrs/day, 37.5 hrs/week, 1,950 hrs/year

8 hours minus a 30-minute break = 7.5 hrs/day; ×5 days = 37.5/week; ×52 weeks = 1,950/year.

Four-Day Work Week
Input:Start 8:00 AM, End 6:00 PM, 60 min break, 4 days/week
Output:9.0 hrs/day, 36.0 hrs/week

10 hours minus a 1-hour break = 9.0 hrs/day; ×4 days = 36.0 hrs/week.

Common Real-World Use Cases

Annual Hours Planning

Project total yearly work hours for capacity planning or comparing job offers with different schedules.

Part-Time Schedule Comparison

Compare total weekly hours across different shift patterns or part-time arrangements.

Freelance Rate Planning

Combine total available work hours with an hourly rate to estimate potential earnings.

How This Compares

Work Hours Calculator vs. Time Card Calculator

This tool projects one typical shift out to weekly, monthly, and yearly totals - useful for planning, not payroll, since it has no overtime logic. If you need to total an actual week of varying clock-in/clock-out times with overtime automatically split out, use the Time Card Calculator instead.

How to Use the Work Hours Calculator
  1. 1Enter your typical start and end time.
  2. 2Enter your unpaid break duration in minutes.
  3. 3Set how many days per week you work.
  4. 4View your projected hours per day, week, month, and year.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •The monthly figure uses an average of 4.33 weeks per month (52 weeks ÷ 12), which is more accurate than assuming exactly 4 weeks.
  • •If your schedule varies day to day, run the calculator once per shift type and add the results together.
