Overtime Pay Calculator

Calculate regular pay, overtime pay, and total earnings using configurable overtime rate multipliers.

Regular Pay

Overtime Pay (1.5x)
$375.00
Total Pay
$1375.00

What is the Overtime Pay Calculator and How Does It Work?

The Overtime Pay Calculator computes your regular pay, overtime pay, and total earnings by applying a custom overtime multiplier (such as 1.5x for "time and a half" or 2x for "double time") to your hours worked beyond your regular hours.

Calculation Formula
Total Pay = (Hourly Rate × Regular Hours) + (Hourly Rate × Multiplier × Overtime Hours)

Regular pay is your hourly rate times regular hours worked. Overtime pay is your hourly rate times the overtime multiplier times overtime hours worked. The two are added together for total pay.

Where:
Hourly Rate= Your standard hourly wage
Overtime Multiplier= The overtime rate multiplier, e.g. 1.5 for time-and-a-half, 2.0 for double time
Worked Calculation Examples
Standard Time-and-a-Half
Input:$20/hr, 40 regular hours, 5 overtime hours, 1.5x multiplier
Output:$950.00 total pay

Regular pay = 20×40 = $800; overtime pay = 20×1.5×5 = $150; total = $950.

Double Time on a Holiday
Input:$18/hr, 8 regular hours, 8 overtime hours, 2.0x multiplier
Output:$432.00 total pay

Regular pay = 18×8 = $144; overtime pay = 18×2×8 = $288; total = $432.

Common Real-World Use Cases

Paycheck Verification

Confirm your paycheck correctly reflects overtime pay before raising a question with payroll.

Shift Planning

Estimate the cost of scheduling overtime shifts before approving extra hours.

Holiday & Weekend Pay

Calculate earnings for shifts paid at double time or other non-standard multipliers.

What "Time and a Half" Actually Means

Under US federal law (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5x their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week - that's where the default 1.5x multiplier here comes from. Some states (like California) also require daily overtime beyond 8 hours, and double time (2x) in additional situations - this calculator applies whatever multiplier you enter, it doesn't know which legal rule applies to your situation. Check your state's labor law or your employer's policy before assuming 1.5x is the correct multiplier.

How This Compares

Overtime Calculator vs. Time Card Calculator

This tool starts from hours you've already split into regular and overtime, and calculates pay from a rate and multiplier - it has no clock-time or threshold logic. If you need to total a week of clock-in/clock-out times and have the regular/overtime split calculated for you first, use the Time Card Calculator, then bring those numbers here for pay.

How to Use the Overtime Pay Calculator
  1. 1Enter your hourly rate.
  2. 2Enter your regular hours and overtime hours worked separately.
  3. 3Set your overtime multiplier (1.5 for time-and-a-half, 2.0 for double time, or any custom rate).
  4. 4View your regular pay, overtime pay, total pay, and effective blended hourly rate.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •"Time and a half" means a 1.5x multiplier; "double time" means a 2.0x multiplier.
  • •The effective hourly rate shows your true blended pay rate across all hours worked, useful for comparing offers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • •Assuming this calculator knows when overtime kicks in. It doesn't - you tell it how many hours are regular and how many are overtime, and it only calculates the pay. If your state uses daily overtime (e.g. anything over 8 hours in a day counts as OT) rather than weekly overtime (over 40 hours in a week), you need to apply that rule yourself before splitting your hours here.
