Tile Calculator

Calculate the exact number of tiles required for floors or backsplash walls based on tile size and area dimensions.

Total Required Tiles
110 Tiles (includes 10% waste)

Room Area: 100 sq ft | Single Tile Area: 1 sq ft

What is the Tile Calculator and How Does It Work?

The Tile Calculator determines exactly how many tiles you need for a floor or backsplash by dividing the total area to be covered by the area of a single tile, then adding a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.

Calculation Formula
Tiles Needed = (Room Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Waste %)

The room's area is divided by the area of one tile to get a base tile count, then increased by a waste percentage to account for cuts around edges, corners, and occasional breakage.

Where:
Room Area= Length × Width of the area to be tiled, in square feet
Tile Area= Tile Length (in) × Tile Width (in) ÷ 144, converted to square feet
Waste %= Extra tiles to buy for cuts and breakage (default 10%)
Worked Calculation Examples
Bathroom Floor with 12x12 Tiles
Input:80 sq ft room, 12in × 12in tiles, 10% waste
Output:88 tiles

Tile area = (12×12)/144 = 1 sq ft; base count = 80/1 = 80 tiles; ×1.10 waste = 88 tiles needed.

Kitchen Backsplash with Small Tiles
Input:25 sq ft area, 4in × 4in tiles, 10% waste
Output:248 tiles

Tile area = (4×4)/144 = 0.111 sq ft; base count = 25/0.111 ≈ 225; ×1.10 waste ≈ 248 tiles (rounded up).

Common Real-World Use Cases

Bathroom & Kitchen Floors

Calculate exact tile quantities before purchasing to avoid running short mid-installation.

Backsplash Projects

Determine small-format tile counts for kitchen or bathroom backsplash walls.

Contractor Material Lists

Generate a quick material estimate to include in a renovation quote.

How to Use the Tile Calculator
  1. 1Enter the length and width of the area to be tiled.
  2. 2Enter the dimensions of a single tile in inches.
  3. 3Set your waste percentage for cuts and breakage.
  4. 4View the base tile count and the total tiles to purchase including waste.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •Larger tiles mean fewer cuts and typically need less waste allowance than small mosaic tiles.
  • •Always round up to the nearest full box, since most tile is sold by the box covering a fixed area.
