What is the Pixel Density Calculator and How Does It Work?

The Pixel Density Calculator finds a screen's PPI (Pixels Per Inch) from its resolution and diagonal size, along with its total megapixel count - useful for comparing display sharpness or checking if an image has enough resolution for print or a specific screen.

Calculation Formula
PPI = √(Width² + Height²) ÷ Diagonal Size (inches)

The diagonal resolution in pixels is found using the Pythagorean theorem on the width and height in pixels, then divided by the physical diagonal screen size in inches to get pixels per inch.

Where:
Width, Height= Screen resolution in pixels
Diagonal (inches)= The physical diagonal size of the screen
Worked Calculation Examples
27-inch 1440p Monitor
Input:2560 × 1440 resolution, 27" diagonal
Output:108.79 PPI, 3.69 megapixels

Diagonal pixels = √(2560² + 1440²) ≈ 2937.21; PPI = 2937.21 / 27 ≈ 108.79.

Smartphone Screen
Input:1170 × 2532 resolution, 6.1" diagonal
Output:457.25 PPI

Smartphones pack far more pixels per inch than monitors because they are viewed much closer to the eye.

Common Real-World Use Cases

Display Comparison

Compare the sharpness of two monitors or phones with different resolutions and screen sizes.

Print Resolution Planning

Check whether an image has enough pixel density for high-quality printing (typically 300 PPI or higher).

UI Design for High-DPI Screens

Understand a target device's pixel density when designing crisp graphics for Retina or high-DPI displays.

How to Use the Pixel Density Calculator (PPI / DPI)
  1. 1Enter the screen's horizontal and vertical resolution in pixels.
  2. 2Enter the physical diagonal screen size in inches.
  3. 3View the calculated PPI (Pixels Per Inch), total megapixels, and simplified aspect ratio.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •Higher PPI means a sharper display, but it matters most relative to viewing distance - phones need higher PPI than TVs viewed from across a room.
  • •Print work typically needs at least 300 PPI for crisp, professional-quality output.
