What is the Color Palette Generator and How Does It Work?

The Color Palette Generator builds harmonized color combinations from a single base color using established color theory relationships - complementary (opposite on the color wheel), analogous (neighboring hues), and triadic (evenly spaced hues).

Calculation Formula
Complementary = Hue + 180° | Analogous = Hue ± 30° | Triadic = Hue + 120°, Hue + 240°

Each harmony type shifts the base color's hue around the 360° color wheel while keeping saturation and lightness constant. A complementary color sits directly opposite; analogous colors sit close by; triadic colors are evenly spaced in a triangle.

Where:
Hue= The base color's position on the 360° color wheel
Complementary= The color 180° opposite the base hue
Triadic= Two colors 120° and 240° from the base hue, forming an equal triangle
Worked Calculation Examples
Complementary Pair from Blue
Input:Base color #3B82F6 (hue 217°)
Output:Complementary at hue 37° (a warm orange)

217° + 180° = 397°, which wraps to 37° - the color directly opposite blue on the wheel.

Triadic Scheme from Red
Input:Base color at hue 0° (red)
Output:Second color at 120° (green), third at 240° (blue)

Triadic schemes split the wheel into three equal 120° segments for a balanced, vibrant palette.

Common Real-World Use Cases

Brand Color Systems

Build a complete, harmonized color palette starting from a single brand color.

UI Accent Colors

Find complementary or triadic accent colors that pair well with a primary interface color.

Illustration & Graphic Design

Generate color schemes with proven visual harmony for artwork or marketing graphics.

How This Compares

Color Palette Generator vs. Color Shade Generator

Both use the same underlying workspace. This page generates other hues that pair with your base color (complementary, analogous, triadic) - use it when you need accent or secondary colors. The Color Shade Generator instead stays on the same hue and only varies lightness - use it when you need a tint/shade scale of one color, not a set of different colors.

How to Use the Color Palette Generator
  1. 1Pick or enter your base color.
  2. 2View the automatically generated complementary color.
  3. 3View the analogous palette (neighboring hues) and triadic palette (evenly spaced hues).
  4. 4Click any generated swatch to make it the new base color and explore further.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •Complementary schemes create high visual contrast, good for calls-to-action against a primary brand color.
  • •Analogous schemes feel calm and cohesive since the hues are close together - good for backgrounds and gradients.
